How do you keep primer from wrinkling on a model car?

Well, as my making of models was usually too slack to use primer first, I’m no expert, but I do know that both the mirror-smooth surface of the plastic and remaining release oils tend to hurt paint adhesion, and wrinkling/alligatoring can happen. So - clean the surface first, sand lightly.

Are you applying thin layers and low humidity? Also warm the can.

If you rough up the surface first then it shouldn’t be an issue.

Is it plastic?
Wash it with dish detergent first, then allow it to dry completely. Then apply primer in very light coats. Sand with fine grit sandpaper and then apply more primer. Should be smooth.
